IPAF training doesn’t last forever — and if your certification expires, it can quickly become a problem on site.
Whether you’re an individual operator or managing a team, understanding when IPAF training needs to be renewed is essential for staying compliant, avoiding delays, and keeping work moving safely.
This guide covers the key things you need to know about IPAF training renewal — including expiry timelines, what happens if certification lapses, and how to plan ahead.
How Long Does an IPAF PAL Card Last?
An IPAF PAL Card is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
After this period:
- The certification expires
- The operator is no longer compliant
- Most sites will not allow machine operation
This applies whether you’re operating scissor lifts, boom lifts, or multiple MEWP categories.
What Happens If Your IPAF Card Has Expired?
If your PAL Card has expired:
- You cannot legally operate a MEWP on most sites
- Site managers may refuse access
- You may be asked to leave site until certification is updated
- Employers can face audit or insurance issues
In many cases, expired certification leads to lost time, rescheduled work, and extra costs — all of which are easily avoidable with forward planning.
Do You Need to Retake the Full Course?
Yes — once expired, operators must complete IPAF training again for the relevant categories.
There’s no “grace period” once the card lapses, which is why booking ahead is so important.
How to Check Your IPAF PAL Card Expiry Date
You can check expiry by:
- Looking at the expiry date printed on your PAL Card
- Using the IPAF PAL Card app
- Asking your training provider to verify your record
If you’re unsure, the team at DTA Training can help check this for you.
When Should You Book IPAF Renewal Training?
We recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks before expiry, especially if:
- Multiple operators need renewal
- You’re coordinating site schedules
- You want specific dates
This avoids last-minute pressure and ensures continuity on site.
