IPAF Harness Training Ireland – What You Need to Know
When working at height, the correct use of a safety harness is not optional — it’s essential.
While basic harness fitting is covered during IPAF MEWP operator training, dedicated IPAF Harness Training provides deeper, practical instruction in selecting, fitting, inspecting and using harnesses and lanyards correctly.
At DTA Training, our IPAF-approved harness courses ensure operators and supervisors understand not just how to wear a harness — but how to use and manage fall protection systems safely and compliantly.
What Is IPAF Harness Training?
IPAF Harness Training is a certified course designed to give candidates the knowledge and practical skills required to:
- Select the correct harness and lanyard for the task
- Carry out thorough pre-use checks
- Fit and adjust harnesses correctly
- Attach safely within a MEWP
- Conduct formal recorded inspections (where applicable)
This training is particularly important for those operating boom lifts (3b), static booms (1b), or working in environments where fall restraint or fall arrest systems are required.
Why Is Harness Training Important?
Falls from height remain one of the leading causes of serious workplace injuries. Incorrect harness use, poor fitting, or failure to inspect equipment properly can significantly increase risk.
IPAF Harness Training helps:
- Reduce fall-related incidents
- Improve operator confidence
- Ensure compliance with site and insurance requirements
- Protect employers from liability issues
- Maintain correct inspection records
For many sites, certified harness training is now a requirement — not just a recommendation.
The Three Levels of IPAF Harness Training
IPAF harness courses are structured into three levels:
Harness Awareness (HA)
A theory-based introduction covering:
- Types of harnesses and lanyards
- Fall restraint vs fall arrest
- Legal responsibilities
- Equipment management
This is often completed before progressing to practical levels.
Harness User (HU)
A practical, hands-on course covering:
- Correct donning and adjustment
- Pre-use inspection techniques
- Safe attachment in MEWPs
- Identifying damaged or unsafe equipment
This is the most common level for MEWP operators.
Harness Inspector (HI)
Designed for supervisors or those responsible for formal inspections.
Includes:
- Detailed inspection procedures
- Recording and documentation requirements
- Understanding inspection intervals
- Identifying equipment that must be withdrawn from use
What You’ll Learn on the Course
By the end of IPAF Harness Training, candidates will be able to:
- Demonstrate correct harness fitting
- Identify wear, damage or defects
- Select appropriate lanyards for specific machines
- Explain fall protection principles
- Conduct and record inspections (Inspector level)
Training typically includes classroom learning followed by practical demonstration and assessment.
Who Should Attend?
IPAF Harness Training is suitable for:
- MEWP operators (especially 3b and 1b categories)
- Site supervisors
- Safety officers
- Plant managers
- Anyone responsible for inspecting harness equipment
If you are responsible for working at height — or supervising those who do — this course is highly recommended.
Is Harness Training Included in IPAF Operator Training?
Basic harness fitting and awareness is included in standard IPAF operator training.
However, this does not replace full IPAF Harness User or Inspector certification.
If you are required to inspect harnesses or formally manage fall protection equipment, dedicated harness training is necessary.
Certification & Validity
Successful candidates receive IPAF-approved certification.
Certification is typically valid for five years, helping employers maintain ongoing compliance and demonstrate proper safety management.
