If you’re planning to operate a MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform), IPAF training is essential. But if you’ve never taken the course before, you might be wondering what the day actually involves.
At DTA Training, our IPAF Operator course is designed to be practical, straightforward, and focused on real-world safety.
1. Understanding MEWP Categories (3a & 3b)
Before getting hands-on, trainees are introduced to the different types of machines:
- 3a: Static Vertical (scissor lifts)
- 3b: Mobile Boom (articulated & telescopic boom lifts)
You’ll learn where each type is used and how to choose the right machine for the job.
2. Safety Awareness & Responsibilities
A key part of the course focuses on working safely at height:
- Hazard identification
- Risk assessment basics
- Safe operating procedures
- Responsibilities of the operator
This builds the foundation before stepping onto a machine.
3. Pre-Use Inspection
Before any machine is used, it must be checked properly.
You’ll be shown how to carry out:
- Visual inspections
- Function checks
- Identifying faults or safety concerns
This is critical for preventing issues before they happen.
4. Practical Machine Operation
This is where trainees get hands-on experience.
Under instructor guidance, you’ll:
- Safely manoeuvre the machine
- Position correctly for tasks
- Operate controls with confidence
The focus is on real-world scenarios, not just theory.
5. Harness Use & Safety Equipment
Where required, trainees will also cover:
- Correct harness fitting
- When a harness is required
- How to use lanyards safely
This ties directly into safe MEWP operation on site.
6. Theory & Practical Assessment
At the end of the course:
- A short theory test
- A practical assessment
Once successfully completed, you’ll receive your IPAF PAL Card, valid for 5 years.
Whether you’re new to MEWPs or refreshing your certification, our team at DTA Training will guide you through every step of the process.
