IPAF MEWP Training: What Certification Do Operators Actually Need?

When it comes to working at height, choosing the correct IPAF MEWP training isn’t just a compliance box to tick — it’s essential for safety, efficiency, and insurance requirements on site.

Yet one of the most common questions we hear is simple:
“Which IPAF course do our operators actually need?”

This guide breaks it down clearly, so you can book the right training the first time.

What Is IPAF MEWP Training?

IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) MEWP training certifies operators to safely use Mobile Elevating Work Platforms. Successful candidates receive the internationally recognised IPAF PAL Card, valid for five years.

Training is machine-specific — meaning operators must be certified on the types of MEWPs they will actually use on site.

Understanding MEWP Categories

MEWPs are grouped by how they move and where the platform can reach. The most common categories include:

• 3A – Mobile Vertical (e.g. scissor lifts)
Used for straight up-and-down access, typically indoors or on flat ground.

• 3B – Mobile Boom (e.g. articulated or telescopic booms)
Allows outreach as well as height, commonly used outdoors or on larger sites.

• 1A / 1B – Static MEWPs
Platforms that don’t travel while elevated and are set up in a fixed position.

Many operators require more than one category, depending on the equipment used across different jobs.

Who Needs IPAF Training?

IPAF training is required for:

  • MEWP operators
  • Site workers expected to use access platforms
  • Supervisors overseeing MEWP operations
  • Anyone responsible for operating hired or owned MEWPs

Most contractors, facilities teams, and construction sites now require valid IPAF certification as a minimum entry requirement.

Common Booking Mistakes to Avoid

One of the biggest issues we see is operators being trained on the wrong category.

Examples:

  • Booking 3A only, when boom lifts (3B) are regularly used
  • Training one operator instead of a full team
  • Leaving certification too late and delaying site start dates

A short conversation before booking can prevent all of this.
