Working at height is one of the highest-risk activities on any site — and safe operation doesn’t rely on the operator alone.
The new IPAF MEWP Spotter Course has been introduced to support safer, more controlled machine movement by training those assisting MEWP operators on the ground.
At DTA Training, we’re preparing to deliver this new course — helping teams stay compliant, improve communication, and reduce risk on site.
What Is the IPAF MEWP Spotter Course?
The IPAF MEWP Spotter Course is a short, theory-based training programme designed for anyone assisting MEWP operators during machine movement and positioning.
The course is completed entirely online through IPAF eLearning and includes a short theory assessment.
Successful candidates receive an IPAF qualification valid for five years.
What Does a MEWP Spotter Do?
A MEWP spotter plays a key role in maintaining safe working conditions on site.
Their responsibilities typically include:
- Assisting with safe machine positioning
- Monitoring surroundings for hazards
- Communicating clearly with the operator
- Helping prevent collisions or unsafe movements
- Supporting safe operation in restricted or busy areas
In many cases, the spotter acts as the operator’s second set of eyes — especially where visibility is limited.
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is ideal for anyone involved in supporting MEWP operations, including:
- MEWP operators
- Site supervisors
- Site managers
- Banksmen / ground workers
As site safety standards continue to evolve, more sites are expected to require certified spotters — making this training a smart step for both individuals and employers.
Why Is This Training Important?
Even with a trained operator, risks can arise due to:
- Blind spots
- Busy or congested work areas
- Poor communication
- Unexpected site hazards
Having a trained spotter on site helps reduce these risks and improves overall safety and efficiency.
It also ensures your team is better prepared to meet site requirements as expectations around safety continue to increase.
